Natural Hair / Styles

Interview w/Smarr

Local DC graphic Designer Smarr let us know about her hair Joruney
(she is the designer of CurlyNikki.com Header and Logo)

Colbi: So How long have you been natural?
Smarr: My whole life... with a 2 1/2 year intermission lol

Colbi: Did you Transition or did you do the Big Chop?
Smarr: During my freshman yr. of college i big chopped my fro

Colbi: What made you go natural?
Smarr: My hair was pressed all the time until i was 12. Then i learned how to start two strand twisting and doing it myself. I am also afraid of heat so the minute i could style my hair without a hot comb on the stove there was no turning back :)

Colbi: Tell me a little more about your Natural Hair Journey?
Smarr: I did my hair all through middle and high school... twists, puffs, etc. Then in college, i wanted a drastic change. I cut it all off. Then I dyed it. Then I permed it. Then I bleached it. Again & again. Sounds horrible right? I was still afraid of heat so I wet styled my cut everyday.

Everytime I would get a touch up or put more color in my hair, I felt this one spot burning... Then the spot disappeared! LOL

Since I had a short cut... I wanted tracks to cover it up. My stylist refused to glue them in (she was so over me killing me my hair) so I went to someone else. He insisted on touching up my relaxer before doing the weave. As he was combing the relaxer through HUGE CLUMPS OF HAIR WERE COMING OUT IN HIS COMB.

We had to shave my head. Not cut my hair, shave my head. With a patch in the back...

I wore wigs and got cortisone injections for the bald spot for a semester until I could braid my hair again.

Then I relaxed it one more time, realized I missed my natural hair and just transitioned back to natural (FINALLY)

All of my hair grew back and is still growing :) Its funny to think that I was literally bald a couple years ago. In the end its just hair but I don't suggest abusing it to the extent that I did lol...

Colbi: What is your Hair regimen?
Smarr: Once or twice every two weeks:

Co-wash or Bentonite Clay. Condition/Detangle. Dry Overnight. Wake up & do whatever it tells me to do. My hair is bossy.

Colbi: What is the one Hair Product you just have to have and why?
Smarr: Aussie Moist. It detangles, holds... everything. And it leaves my hair really bouncy :)

Colbi: What is it that you love about your hair?
Smarr: I can do ANYTHING with my hair. I love the versatility.

Colbi: How do you wear your hair normally?
Smarr: Ok... lazy days = puff. When I miss my short cut, I pin-up my twists or I do a really tight bantu knot out so it will shrink up. Tree braids or twist extensions when I need to ignore my hair for a couple weeks.

Colbi: Can you give some advice for others thinking about going natural?
Smarr: Do it. You can always flat iron it or change it back.

I don't believe that you have to have a certain look to go natural. There's an endless amount of styles you can do without relaxer. You just have to find what works for you :)
